FAQs (Frequently asked questions)
Where is the nearest supermarket?
There is a Booths in Windermere 10 miles away; and Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s and Booths in Penrith 18 miles away.
Where is the nearest train station?
The nearest train stations are in Windermere (10 miles) or Penrith (18 miles).
Can I book a grass pitch for a campervan or sleep in my vehicle?
No. Our license does not allow us to accommodate guests who sleep inside a vehicle (car, campervan, motorhome, caravan, roof tent, van conversion or any other vehicle) unless you have booked a hardstanding pitch. Grass tent pitches are strictly for tents only. Anyone found to be sleeping in a vehicle will not be allowed to stay on the campsite.
Is there a bus service?
The Kirkstone Rambler (508) runs past the site 5 times a day from Easter to the End of October. The nearest bus service in the winter is the Patterdale to Penrith service 3 miles from the site.
Can I book a taxi?
Mike’s taxis are an excellent local service biased in Glenridding. Pre-booking is advisable. Their phone number is 017384 82372 or 07770 444159.
Do you have secure storage for mountain bikes?
Unfortunately we do not have any storage facilities for bikes. Guests normally secure them to their bike racks on their cars. Bicycles are not permitted in any of the bunkhouse, bed and breakfast rooms or galley kitchen area.
Do you allow dogs?
Dogs are welcome on the campsite and in the bunkhouse. They are also permitted in the Brotherswater Inn and Barn End Bar. We do not allow pets in the cottage or bed and breakfast rooms (except guide dogs). Dogs must be kept on a lead and under control at all times. There is also a dog walking area half way down the driveway.
Do you allow fires?
We do not allow fires on the ground as they damage the grass and can be dangerous during very dry periods. However we do not mind small fires in a suitable container raised off the ground. Fires are always at the discretion of the warden. If he believes your fire to be too big or too near your tent he may ask you to extinguish it. Fire must be extinguished by 11pm for safety reasons.
Do you allow barbeques?
Yes, everyone is welcome to barbeque (weather permitting!) so long as it is raised off the ground either on legs or by one of the bricks kept under the bins on the campsite.
Can I park next to my tent pitch?
Possibly. There are various small car parks and laybys around the campsite so if you chose to pitch next to a parking area then you may well be able to park next to your tent. We also allow parking on the edge of the field when the weather is dry enough. Cars are not usually permitted in the middle of the campsite as driving over drains can cause damage, and cars can end up getting blocked in by tents. Often we ask larger vehicles such as vans to park up in the pub car park if the weather is forecast to be wet. During winter we only use the parking areas in order to protect the grass.
What time can I arrive?
Arrivals for camping can check in after 1pm but before 8pm. There is no late arrivals area. Check in for the bunkhouses and bed and breakfast is after 5pm but before 8pm.
What time do I have to leave?
Check out is by 12 noon for the campsite and 10.30am for the bunkhouses, pods and bed and breakfast. Late checkouts can be arranged so long as we are not fully booked.
Do you allow children in the bar?
Yes, we have a residents licence so children can stay right up until closing time!
Do you need any coins or tokens for the showers?
No, our showers are all push button operated.
Can I run a tab to my room or bunkhouse?
No, it is not possible to charge food or drinks to your room. We can run a tab to a table so long as you leave a credit or debit card behind the bar, and the table is inside. The tab must be cleared when you vacate your table.
Do you have a drying room?
Unfortunately we do not have the space for a drying room. However there are token operated tumble driers in the laundry room. Tokens can be purchased from the shop and Brotherswater Inn.
Will my mobile phone work?
Probabaly. Apart from the network Three we have pretty consistent 4G coverage.
Will my television work?
Free Sat television systems should work on the campsite. We do not receive any Freeview signal (we are surrounded by hills). The analogue signal has now been switched off in Cumbria so only digital systems will work. However sometimes the weather can affect TV systems on the campsite so it is always best to bring a supply of books or DVDs!
Do you have Sky Sports?
We have FreeSat televisions in all our bed and breakfast rooms, and in the bar. We do not have a Sky Sports subscription. However television reception can be affected by bad weather, particularly strong winds.
What are the shop opening hours?
The shop is generally open every day from 8am until 6pm (until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Hours may be extended in the summer and reduced in the winter.
Do you allow drones to fly?
No. It is illegal to fly a drone within 50 metres of a person, vessel, vehicle or structure not under the control of the pilot. Therefore, drones may not fly without obtaining permission from every person staying and working on the campsite which obviously is not practical.
